Challenges with the modern rhetorical use of "sustainable"
ARTICLE STILL UNDER REVISION:
I've entitled an entire section to this blog as Sustainable living, but should I change that because the general consensus of the word sustainable is different than my own envisionment?
Believe it or not, the words we use with ourselves has greater impact than we often give credit for. The way we communicate our ideas and apply terms to our ideas, the possibility of confusion and deviation increases. That's why I want this article to focus on critical thinking around what sustainability really is, what it means to different communities and individuals, and if there's a better mentality or rhetorical term to an eco-conscious lifestyle.
I was browsing my YouTube home page, as one would read the newspaper of the ancient 20th century, when I came across Kay's Living The Life You Love's video: My BIG Issue with Sustainability + Why I Don't Live A Sustainable Life . She made some very interesting points surrounding the use of the word "sustainable". Points I've heard a few times from ecologists and other eco-conscious individuals. What I've deducted from this is that many of them believe its become a blanket term for a lifestyle that just doesn't meet the bar for this idea of a truly efficient, obtainable eco-conscious lifestyle we have enamored ourselves with. For example, Kay states that a more suitable term for the idea we have painted is regenerative and not sustainable.
I found her perspective intriguing and hopped down the rabbit hole of what do other outspoken eco-conscious folk think?
